Fishermen Show Remarkable Knowledge Surpassing Scientific Data.

November 27, 2016

Maracaipe, Pernambucoo Brazil.  Local residents known as jangadeiros (raft fishermen) have a lucrative side job - seahorse watchers.  After picking up tourists they navigate their jangada (raft) along the coastal mangroves then free dive to collect seahorses which are held in a jar for tourists to observe. They answer questions and provide information about the threatened species which are then released unharmed.

Started over a decade ago, this is the first time the project had been investigated and researchers were impressed. In their 2016 study published in the Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine researchers acknowledged that the  fishermen's expertise exceeded scientific data  and recommended that marine management team up with jangadeiros to better conserve the species.
